Overview
Ground beetles are a large, diverse family of beetles commonly found throughout Bowling Green. They are predominantly beneficial insects that prey on garden pests including slugs, caterpillars, and other insect larvae. However, they frequently enter homes at night, attracted by exterior lighting. Their fast running speed and shiny black appearance often cause alarm. While they are harmless and do not damage structures or belongings, their presence indoors can be a nuisance, especially during summer months.
Appearance
Ground beetles are flat-bodied, elongated, and oval-shaped, ranging from 1/8 to over 1 inch in length. Most species are shiny black, though some are dark brown or display iridescent green, blue, or copper coloring. They have prominent, forward-facing mandibles, long legs built for running, and wing covers (elytra) that are often ridged or grooved. They are very fast runners.
Habitat
Ground beetles live on the ground (as their name suggests) under stones, logs, leaf litter, mulch, and boards. They are nocturnal predators that hide during the day and emerge at night to hunt. They are strongly attracted to lights and frequently end up on porches, in garages, and inside homes through gaps under doors and around windows.
Diet
Ground beetles are voracious predators that feed on slugs, snails, caterpillars, aphids, grubs, and other soil-dwelling insects. Some species also consume weed seeds. They are considered highly beneficial for garden and agricultural pest management.
Lifecycle
Most ground beetles complete one generation per year. Females lay eggs in the soil, and larvae develop in the ground, feeding on soil insects and organic matter. Both larvae and adults are predatory. Adults can live 2 to 4 years — unusually long for beetles. They overwinter as adults in sheltered ground-level locations.

- ✓Reduce mulch and leaf litter directly against the foundation
Professional Treatment
Ground beetles rarely need professional treatment because they are beneficial and do not infest structures. Reducing outdoor lighting and sealing entry points are the most effective strategies. Perimeter treatments around the foundation can reduce the number entering the home. Individuals found indoors can simply be swept or vacuumed up and released outside.
